4th International Meeting «Acting together for the future of the Blue Planet »
This 4th International Meeting will be held in France from the 9th to the 12th May 2010 at Nausicaá, in Boulogne sur Mer.
This meeting will be an opportunity for the World Ocean Network to pursue its educational and awareness raising activities on the theme of ocean preservation, with the double objective of : (1) encouraging everyone to preserve the planet’s ecosystems by moving towards sustainable ocean stewardship and (2) persuading all relevant public and private sector organisations to save the ocean by adopting ambitious political, economic and societal strategies.
This meeting is for members of the Network, for citizens of the ocean passport holders and also for the wider public from across the region.
A favourable international context
This year’s meeting will be taking place in a particularly busy international context :
- five months after the United Nation’s Climate Change Conference (from the 7th to the 18th of December, in Copenhagen) ;
- two days after the 5th Global Conference on the Oceans, Coasts and Islands, on the theme «Ensuring survival, Preserving Life, and Improving Governance » ;
- 2010 has been declared the International Year of Biodiversity by the United Nations General Assembly.
An ambitious strategy and multiple objectives
This year’s international meeting is the 4th organised by the World Ocean Network. At the 3rd meeting several new strands of action were established :
- the « responsible consumption of seafood products » campaign ;
- the organisation of events and activities in some 5O countries for World Ocean Day.
- the printing of the « Citizen of the Ocean » Passport in new languages.
- the organisation of Youth Parliaments.
- an increasing recognition by a number of international fora of the educational dimension in their policy programmes
The objectives of this year’s 4th meeting are as follows :
To share and enrich education and mobilisation campaigns that have been successfully implemented in different countries, and especially the campaigns of the World Ocean Network members and partners;
To adopt a strategy of actions and communication in link to ocean hot topics. To develop this strategy in the 3 forthcoming years the network and partners will work together with support of new or reinforced regional delegations.
